Characteristics of Knitted Fabrics:
Knitted fabrics are created by interlocking yarns into continuous loops using knitting needles. They can be categorized into Weft Knitted fabrics and warp knitted fabrics.
Weft knitted fabric is produced horizontally, with a single continuous yarn forming loops to create the fabric structure. While weft knitted fabrics are relatively easier to manufacture, they are susceptible to edge unraveling during cutting.
On the other hand, warp knitted fabric is typically produced lengthwise, featuring a zigzag organization that allows for the formation of two or more continuous walls of loops. Compared to weft knitted fabrics, warp knitted fabrics tend to have a smoother and more compact texture, resulting in reduced elasticity and enhanced resistance to runs.
Flexibility and Elasticity: Knitted fabrics, constructed from interlooped yarns, exhibit exceptional flexibility in multiple directions, providing a comfortable and accommodating fit for the body. This inherent elasticity allows for ease of movement and bending during various activities.
Soft and Gentle Texture: Knitted garment fabrics are crafted from plush, low-twist yarns, resulting in a surface with a delicate layer of micro-suede. The loose and porous structure of the fabric minimizes skin friction, offering a gentle and comfortable sensation.
Moisture Management and Breathability: The interlooped construction of knitted fabrics creates numerous isolated air pockets within the fabric, promoting effective heat retention and air permeability. Additionally, natural fibers, particularly cotton, possess notable moisture absorption properties, contributing to a cool and breathable sensation when worn, particularly in warm weather.
Wrinkle Resilience: Knitted fabrics demonstrate excellent wrinkle recovery, with the interlooped coils adapting to external forces and quickly returning to their original state once the force is removed. This characteristic ensures that knitted garments maintain a smooth and unwrinkled appearance, even after wear or storage.
Types of Common Knitted Fabrics:
Sweat Cloth:
Sweat cloth is characterized by a continuous circular knit structure, with distinct front lines and a smooth surface texture. It offers excellent longitudinal and transverse extensibility, with greater stretch in the transverse direction. While providing good moisture absorption and air permeability, it may exhibit detachability, crimping, and occasional coil skewing.
Pique fabric
Pique fabric commonly produced on a Circular Knitting machine, features a distinctive waffle texture created using knit and tuck stitches. Known for its raised geometric patterns, it is often used in polo shirts and sportswear due to its visual appeal and breathability. The circular knitting machine enables efficient production of pique fabric with consistent quality.
Fleece Fabric:
Fleece fabric, also known as French Terry or fleece after brushing, is predominantly produced using displaced yarn, resulting in a textured surface. It is also referred to as displacement or terry cloth, with some regions calling it fish scale cloth due to its terry-like appearance. This fabric comes in various weights, typically ranging from 190g/m2 to 350g/m2.
Ribbed Fabric:
Ribbed knitted fabric features a pattern where a single yarn forms alternating coils on the front and back. It shares characteristics with plain fabric, including stretch and recovery, while offering greater elasticity. Variants such as 1x1 and 2x2 rib structures are distinguishable due to their specific patterns.
Roman Fabric:
Roman fabric, also known as Ponte de Roma or chicken beating cloth, is a weft-knitted fabric produced on a double-sided circular machine. It exhibits a four-way stretch and a slightly irregular horizontal bar texture. This fabric offers good elasticity in both horizontal and vertical directions, making it suitable for close-fitting garments with breathable, soft, and comfortable properties.
